We'd allowed one of our cats to get in the habit of having the faucet turned on at a trickle for her to drink. Huge mistake. She'd sit in a bathroom and yowl for someone to turn on the water, and her yowl could be used to etch diamonds, believe me! We also have several cats who are getting up in age, and, since kidney failure is a common ailment in older cats, we wanted to be sure they were drinking adequate amounts of water.
This fountain has been an ideal solution, and a benefit to all our cats (there were 5 at the time of purchase). Cleaning does take some time, but, now that I've done it for a bit, I can usually scrub it thoroughly and have it back in use in 15 minutes. I dump the water and give it a quick wipe every 7-10 days, and then a thorough cleaning (including the motor--VERY important!) every 5 weeks. The small plastic "gate" at the back of the drinking pool gets rinsed a couple of times per week; that takes about 20 seconds.
It's amazingly quiet and has been trouble-free. We are very satisfied with this product.

I would highly recommend this product for anyone with multiple pets. I have two cats, a small dog, and a medium sized dog, and they all love drinking out of this fountain. Before purchasing this, I was refilling water bowls every morning and throughout the day, and now it is so easy to just have one. With the large tank, I refill the tank maybe once a day, and I can leave the cats for 4 days and not worry about them running out of clean water. The product does require regular, routine cleaning, I definitely recommend taking the motor apart every week and cleaning it out with the rest of the fountain. The first time cleaning was a bit tricky, but the instructions and illustrations were great, once you get the hang of it, it is really, really easy. If you do not want to have to take it apart and clean it every week to make sure it is safe, do not buy this product.

I really liked this product until I got crack in the water reservoir and couldn't get a replacement. They will sell you a new pump, lid, base but you can't get the reservoir. I wouldn't call something that can become totally useless if the reservoir no longer works Platinum. I will never buy another Drinkwell product again.

Just a short review.
The product is very easy to assemble. Really isn't very loud if you put everything together properly and let the water balance. It's a similar noise as any other small desk fountain. You will hear a motor and the water running. The loud noises only happen when the water levels are wrong. It's rather large and does splatter a little tiny bit.
However, my cat won't touch it. Sniffed and then never drank from it. After giving her no water for a bit less than a day and her obviously willing to die of dehydration rather than drink from the fountain, it's now, sadly, part of a give-away box as I'm well past the return date.
So, to owners who haven't used 'fountains' before with their pets, try it fast... if your pet won't drink from it, send it back!

My cat was recently diagnosed with chronic renal failure. Her vet suggested a pet fountain, such as the Drinkwell. I've had mine a couple of months now.
1. It's quiet, but not silent. The motor makes a slight hum and occasionally I hear the water splashing a bit. However, it's far more quiet than my refrigerator, for example. So it's not at all disruptive.
2. It's easy to clean. Once a week, I pull the filter out, run, some bleach through it for a few minutes. Then I put the basin and riser in the upper rack of my dishwasher. I hand wash the reservoir and gate. Then reassemble. Once every two weeks, I use the brush accessories to clean the inside of the motor. It takes me about 15 minutes of actual work time once each week. My cat is worth far more than that.
3. It clearly makes my cat drink more water than she used to, which her vet says is good for her kidneys. She now rarely drinks out of her bowl, though I keep it supplied with water, too.
4. Fit and finish seem good so far. I'll admit that I'm interested to see how long the motor lasts. It doesn't externally look rugged, but we'll see.
Overall, it does what it's intended to do (get my cat to drink more) and is easy to maintain. So I'm quite happy with it.
